Mayor Janice S. Mironov and the East Windsor Township Council, joined by Mercer County Community Development Specialist Terry West and Edward “Chip” Meara, Mercer County Municipal Alliance Program Coordinator, adopted a Resolution at the June 26 Council meeting proclaiming June as “Mental Health Awareness Month,” as part of a Mercer County-wide effort to educate the community on this important public health issue.
Mayor Mironov stated, “East Windsor Township is participating in this initiative to enhance public awareness of the importance of maintaining individual mental health and it is a subject that all of us can relate to personally through our own life experiences. Those who are experiencing mental health problems often don’t want to confront these issues due to the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. This initiative is to increase public understanding of the importance of promoting positive mental health by encouraging anyone who is struggling with mental health issues or problems or knows someone who is in this situation to seek the appropriate treatment, counseling or support necessary so they can live their lives in a happier and more productive fashion.”
Mercer County Community Development Specialist Terry West stated, “Mercer County has taken this program on the road in support of Mental Health Awareness Month. Too many people live with mental health issues and are too afraid to ask for assistance, when coming forward and addressing it would lead them to the benefits of mental health assistance.” He thanked East Windsor Township for being the first municipality in Mercer County to participate in the initiative by proclaiming June as Mental Health Awareness Month.
The Resolution noted that “one in four adults experiences mental health problems in any given year and one in 17 adults lives with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder.” The Resolution further stated that “every citizen and community can make a difference in helping end the silence and stigma that for too long has surrounded mental illness and discouraged people for obtaining the needed help to recover from the disease.”
