Trenton, NJ – February 24, 2016 – Several of the state’s leading business organizations – including the MIDJersey Chamber of Commerce – have joined together to form Opportunity NJ – a coalition whose primary goals will be strengthening the economy and creating jobs in the state over the long-term. The coalition was announced on February 19 at a press reception at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Trenton.
The grassroots organization, a 501(c)(4) formation, will increase awareness about the damaging impact that certain policies and legislative action will have on the state’s economy and job growth for New Jersey citizens. First and foremost, the coalition will form an opposition to three particular initiatives: $15 minimum wage legislation, mandate on paid sick leave and a constitutional mandate on quarterly pension payments. These three initiatives in particular could have a widespread and crippling effect on the state’s economy.
Several of the coalition members were sponsors of the New Jersey State Chamber’s Business Summit in September in which state leaders were invited to hear directly from the business community about the various challenges hindering growth in the state. There was much dialogue about four key issues: reforming the state’s tax structure, funding infrastructure projects and the Transportation Trust Fund, minimizing government regulations and mandates and maintaining the high-quality of the workforce here in New Jersey. The long-term agenda of the coalition will include setting out to tackle those four challenges while leveling the economic playing field.
“This coalition will play a vital role in shaping the future of the state’s economy,” says Robert Prunetti, President & CEO of the MIDJersey Chamber of Commerce, a leader of the group. “The Opportunity NJ collaboration will be significant in addressing top business concerns and changing the business landscape here in New Jersey.”
The coalition will try to spur competitiveness and improve the business climate through its firm stance on anti-business policy and oppressive economic initiatives in the state legislature.
The coalition is comprised of business organizations, trade associations, labor groups, educational institutions, not-for-profits and individual companies throughout the State of New Jersey. Donations from a wide range of individuals, businesses and organizations will help fund the campaign.
